What is death
when we live in a garden?
A garden does not know death,
only life that is visible
and invisible.
And it must be made painfully clear,
that there is only a distinction
between these lives
because of our limited sight.
To a garden, it is simply called life.
What is death
when we live in The Garden?
And we surely must still live in
The Garden.
God’s creation did not stop being a garden
Simply because we decided
we could no longer tolerate
the taste of honest labor—
because we turned away
from the earth,
instead of working
in concert with it—
because we thought ourselves too
great to concern ourselves
with something
so low.
What is death
when we come from a garden?
For a garden wastes nothing.
Through its holy
and unending magic,
it turns everything we call dead
into life again.
It is only when we
resist
death, that
death should be feared.
To resist,
to attempt to remove ourselves from
the Garden and its consequences
is to live death
every day of our lives.
What is death
when we meet The Gardner
at the empty tomb?
Death, through its
embrace,
is overcome, and
the Earth invites us
into its eternal life.
There is no death
where the garden lives.
